Foreigners have been the victims of 16 robberies, three thefts and one swindle so far this year, two less incidents than in the same period of last year.
Colonel Nguyen Phi Hung, deputy chief of the Anti-Crime Police General Department under the Ministry of Public Security, said foreigners were particularly vulnerable to property crime because they were not familiar withViet Nam.
“Protecting foreigners from criminals is of special concern to local police,” Hung said.
Hung suggested that travel companies alert foreign tourists about the methods of pickpockets and other thieves and show them ways to deal with the situations and protect their belongings.
Hung also asked city authorities to take measures to guard foreigners from overcharging by retailers.
Major General Nguyen Chi Thanh, director of the local Police Department, said the City police would set up a network to follow suspects known to police.
Thanh ordered task forces to use the camera system of the city police's Command Information Centre and traffic cameras to inform units on the whereabouts of suspected criminals.
